Lets turn to another subject which was close to Tyagaraja's heart. No prizes for guessing.

Music.

He probably was the only composer who had composed krithis on music itself.

The famous ones include

'Sogasuga Mridanga Talamu' in Sriranjani,

'Naada Suda Rasam' in Aarabhi,

'Nada Tanumanisham' in Siddaranjani, '

Raga Sudha Rasa' in Andholika,

"Sangeetha Sastra Gnanamu' in Mukahri,

'Sitavara Sangita Gnanamu' in Devaghandari, etc.

These krithis give an idea of what Tyagaraja felt about music. All these krithis are beautiful and it would take a genius immersed in music to come up with such krithis.

Infact he says that only with 'Nadopasana' (Begada) did Vishu, Brahma and Siva become great.

In the other great Shankarabaranam krithi, 'Swara Raga Sudha' he says that finding the exact places of each swara is the route to moksham.

SWARARAGASUDHA”

Devotion associated with the ambrosia of Swara and

Riga is verily paradise and salvation, O Mind! What is the

good of a crane and a frog trying to frolick over the lotus of

Brahmánandam! To know and realize the nature of Nada,

originating from Mul&dhara, is itself bliss and salvation.

Likewise is a knowledge of the various resonant sthaAnas

(parts of the body) from which emanate the glorious Sapta-

swaras. One attains salvation when he becomes a Jnáni

after several births; but he who has knowledge of ráAgas

along with natural devotion is indeed a liberated soul.

Can happiness be had merely by thumping without the

least knowledge of mridangam, talam, and gati? Similarly

a man doing worship without purity of mind is no better

than a pig.

A deep knowledge of the secrets of the Swarárnava,

imparted to Párvati by Lord Siva is possessed by blessed

Tyágaráje. Learn them from him, Oh Mind! by approach-

ing him with faith.
