Only recently, I happened to read this very special opera thanks to Sri.V.Govindan.

There are 45 kruthis in this opera.

I am trying to give simple translation/gist wherever available for each kruthi and add the rendition by famous vocalists.

Oh men of devotion! Adore Ganapati who, having

received the worship of Brahma, is coming, dancing gloriou¬

sly ! Who, after partaking of the offering of jack-fruit, cocoa-

nuts, jambu fruit etc., is coming, treading the earth with his

heavy resounding steps! Who, with the holy feet of Hari in¬

stalled in his heart, comes out dancing in a variety of

rhythms! Ganapaty whom TySgaraja praises in all humility..

நாமகள் கேள்வன் ஆகியோரின் வழிபாட்டினையேற்று,

நன்கு நடமிட்டுக்கொண்டு, எழுந்தருளிய

கணபதியைச் சேவிக்க வாரீர்,

பற்றுகொண்ட மனிதரே!

பலா, தேங்காய், நாவல் முதலான

பழங்களையருந்தி,

மிக்கு அழுத்தமாக, புவியில், பதங்களினை

கலீர்கலீரென வைத்து,

எவ்வமயமும், அரியின் திருவடிகளை இதயக்

கமலத்தினிலிருத்தி,

பலவித (தாள) நடைகளில், தித்தளாங்கென,

எழுந்தருளிய, தியாகராசனால் போற்றப்பெற்றோனாகிய

கணபதியைப் பணிவுடன் சேவிக்க வாரீர்,

பற்றுகொண்ட மானிடரே!

இப்பாடல் 'பிரகலாத பக்தி விஜயம்' எனும் நாடகத்தின்  ஆரம்பத்தில் கணபதியின் வருகையை சித்தரிக்கின்றது

.In the kRti ‘vAsudEvayani veDalina’ – rAga kalyANi (tALa Adi), SrI tyAgarAja describes how the gate-keeper comes chanting the names of the Lord..

..Gist

See this gate-keeper who proceeded chanting ‘vAsudEva’!

In his mind, thinking of the Lotus Eyed Lord worshipped by indra and other celestials,

he proceeded chanting ‘vAsudEva’.

Wearing ochre dhoti,

sporting auspicious red tilaka on his fore-head,

circling this assembly again and again, and

always holding a golden staff,

he proceeded chanting ‘vAsudEva’.

Every now and then stroking his moustache,

priding as if he is himself cupid,

hopping and jumping,

mimicking that he is like this, and

laughing heartily,

he proceeded chanting ‘vAsudEva’.

Dancing very nicely,

praying to Lord hari - the redeemer of the fallen,

singing to rAga, tALa and gati, and

extolling the Lord well-praised by tyAgarAja,

he proceeded chanting ‘vAsudEva’.

வாசவன் முதலான வானோரால் தொழப் பெற்றோனாகிய,

கமலக்கண்ணனை உள்ளத்தினில் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு,

'வாசுதேவா' யென்று புறப்பட்ட இந்த

வாயிற் காப்போனைக் காணீரே!

1. நீர்க்காவி வேட்டி கட்டி,

நெற்றியினில் திருமண்ணிட்டு,

திரும்பத் திரும்ப, இந்த அவையினிற் சுற்றி,

எவ்வமயமும், பொற் கோலினைப் பற்றி,

'வாசுதேவா' யென்று புறப்பட்ட இந்த

வாயிற் காப்போனைக் காணீரே!

2. அடிக்கடி, மீசையினை முறுக்கி,

மன்மத உருவத்தோன் தானெனச் செருக்கி,

தாண்டித் தாண்டிக் குதித்து,

தானிவ்விதமெனப் பகர்ந்து, வாய்விட்டுச் சிரித்து,

'வாசுதேவா' யென்று புறப்பட்ட இந்த

3. ஒயில் மீர நடனமாடிக்கொண்டு,

This opera is not dealing with the story of Prahalada and Narasimha avatar of Baagavatham and Naaraayanneeyam.

Many songs mention Lord Raamachandra. This likely to confuse the reader.

Excerpts

in the work. Rama was to Tyagaraja the Supreme Being, just as Krishna was to Jayadeva. He was therefore not just the seventh avatara but the Lord who manifested as Narasimha and pervaded all the incarnations. Tyagaraja undergoes all the mood swings that manifest through Prahlada as the opera progresses . All worldly troubles are viewed by Tyagaraja as obstacles placed in his path of true devotion and that is Prahlada’s opinion too. In many ways, it is the triumph of Tyagaraja’s devotion, expressed as Prahlada’s.

The storyline is almost certainly Tyagaraja’s own for there are no prior creations that match it. But it is clearly influenced by Marathi theatre and more importantly, the local Melattur Bhagavata Mela tradition

.

Sonti Venkatasubbayya, the father of Tyagaraja’s guru Venkataramanayya, was a disciple of Narayana Teertha and so in a way, Tyagaraja too belonged to the same tradition

.

please speak to the Lord a word about me;

please save my life, adopting any method.

please tell the path adhering to which

the Lord would never be separated from me;

I shall not worry about all

the troubles created by demons;

I shall not beg for Worldly pleasures,

wealth and prosperity;

I shall not let go Lord hari from my mind;

please, therefore, tell me the path

adhering which I

may behold the Lord to the satiation of my eyes.

Throughout my life, I have been troubled by demons;

I am eleven (or five or six) years of age;

but, the Lord – friend of tyAgarAja –

VaruNaa tells prahlada how to see Lord Hari.

O Dear!

Lord hari will come to see you;

Lord hari, will surely come;

Seeing you, He will laud you;

Lord hari will come searching for you.

Considering the contemptible sense objects etc. as a fire, with love, extol highly our Lord -

the Brave One,

who embodied as sItA rAma,

the prop of all the Worlds,

the Wish Tree of true devotees,

the most Auspicious,

the Chief of Gods,

the peerless beauty, and

the supremely compassionate.

He will not come for any japa or penance etc.;

He will not come for sacrificial oblations etc.

Whole-heartedly extol the Lord praised by tyAgarAja now..

O Bestower of prosperity!

O Ocean of mercy! O Lord resident in the heart of this tyAgarAja!

Salutations to You.

Why do You dispute with me? Am I alien to You? Does it bring happiness to You?

Is it a burden to protect me? Is it any kind of negotiation (between us)?

I heard about You; I trusted You; I sought refuge in You; and, therefore, I prayed to You to come.

I shall not accept defeat; I shall not abandon my devotion; I shall not beseech others, because I am Yours.

Please tell me to come, offer You sweet-scented betel leaves and receive Your boons.

Is it fair? Is there any benefit to You? Why further dislike?

Please look at me, protect me, and be united with me befittingly.

The name of rAma is the comfort for me, the sacred abode for me and (chanting of Your name is) daily vow for me.

Please come quickly.

Excepting for those great personages, who -

rejecting possessions or acquisitions existing in this World, and

forgetting their bodies,

unite with Lord SrI hari,

how shall I find out Lord SrI hari?

I remained without knowing Him because of unremitting arrogance; Alas! that day itself, I failed to adhere (to the path leading) to the merciful Lord.

Am I not the one who fell in love with Lord SrI hari since my child-hood?

This life, these fortunes and these properties – are all these of any use?

How shall I find out Lord SrI hari - praised by tyAgarAja.

At least now, has the Great Lord – benefactor of tyAgarAja - thought of me! Did He laud me to be eligible for His grace!

I listened, nicely, to the booty of all the words about me, graciously uttered by the Lord, to my Mother; today my mind has become very cool because of You.

I aspired for the highest (form of) grace; I was undergoing sufferings; today I beheld You as a feast to my eyes; I heard words which are nectarine to my ears.

Even if He, assuming various forms, watches the fun, by afflicting me, and/or even if He torments me many a times, all the merits and demerits are unto Lord hari only; what else can I say?

I shall not be born in the Earth again and again; I have trusted Lord hari; I cannot forbear the delay.

employed in singing devoutly the praise of Sri Ramamurti,

the protector of Tyagaraja? Or, for the matter of it, what

for is then the rosary mechanically rolling in hand ?

your dilficulties, I will, with valour, and in a grand praises

worthy manner, grant you the kingdom of Brahma and

Oh Lord! You are sporting with the five elements and
